If you don't have insurance, negotiate! Never pay full price in healthcare. When I get my EBOS, BCBS pays about 25%-50% of what the "retail price" is. For example, Northwestern billed them close to $500 for a couple of simple blood tests, but the negotiated insurance rate is about $150. Think of insurance companies like Costco or Walmart when it comes to buying power.
When I started bike racing in 2006, I got dropped from every race [and team ride] for months. But I persevered and have steadily improved — I'm now a cat 3 (!) and expecting to get my butt kicked by the tough 1,2,3 field.

I still shudder when I think about the bill from my throat surgery in February... $708/hour average for a 24 hour stay.

Happily, I have insurance and they're covering everything but my $75 co-pay.
